Frequently asked questions

Can foreigners legally get married in Greece?

Yes. Greece allows civil marriages between any two people, regardless of nationality or residency. You'll need specific documents depending on your nationality — our wizard above will tell you exactly what.

How long does it take to prepare the paperwork?

Allow 2-3 months minimum. Some documents (like the Certificate of No Impediment or Apostille) can take weeks to obtain. We recommend starting at least 4 months before your wedding date.

What is an Apostille and do I need one?

An Apostille is an international certification that makes a document legally valid abroad. Most countries that signed the Hague Convention (US, UK, Australia, EU) require Apostille stamps on birth certificates and other documents for use in Greece.

Do all documents need to be translated into Greek?

Yes. All foreign-language documents must be officially translated into Greek by a certified translator or the Greek consulate in your home country. Translations must be done after the Apostille is applied.

Can we have a religious wedding in Greece?

Yes. Orthodox ceremonies are the most common, but Catholic and other Christian ceremonies are also possible. At least one partner must be baptized in the respective faith. Symbolic ceremonies are popular for non-religious couples.
